The City might Win!

The City might win after all, if it doesn't follow after Damascus Urban Organisational Planning Model! If one can make such a description
(Praying, that God might help Middle-Eastern cities)
I'm sharing a session on Rethinking the City of Aleppo post-war future, and hopeful civic thinking, enjoy...

Rethink Aleppo: The City Always Wins (EN) from Pakhuis de Zwijger on Vimeo.
Imagining and designing a city of the future. With talks, a variety of workshops and an Eat to Meet 'vrijheidsmaaltijd'.

Aleppo is one of the oldest cities in the world and has been rebuilt many times before. We will dive into history and the elements that make Aleppo, a distinct city with AlHakam Shaar from The Aleppo Project and Dutch Historian Geert Mak. Then we look into historical examples of rebuilding cities from Afghanistan to Macedonia. After that, young Syrian designers will share their sense of design of Syrian homes. We are then ready to imagine future scenarios for Aleppo. You can choose one of three workshops on future city making. Join us and contribute to cutting edge ideas, disruptive innovations, out of the box efforts, hardcore research and diverse networks about place making and building future cities. Naturally, exercises in hopeful futures include music, films, beauty and dinner!

An Urban Story

PAPER CITY

Published on Oct 9, 2014

As part of its Urban October celebrations, UN-Habitat has launched “Paper City”, a stop-motion video animation portraying today’s urban challenges using a paper and cardboard mock city.

Aimed at an audience not yet familiar with urbanization processes, the video intends to draw attention on current issues caused by rapid and uncontrolled city growth. It points out possible urban solutions in a visual and attention-captivating way that is fun and easy to understand.

The video was done using a stop-motion technique. Over 1500 photo stills where taken of a 4 sqm mock city including buildings, streets, trees, cars and people made out of paper, cardboard and polystyrene. The frames were then added together to create motion.

The “Paper City” video is currently available on UN-Habitat’s website (unhabitat.org) and on YouTube.

Tales of Creativity & Play

Uploaded on Nov 10, 2008
http://www.ted.com At the 2008 Serious Play conference, designer Tim Brown talks about the powerful relationship between creative thinking and play -- with many examples you can try at home (and one that maybe you shouldn't).

Designers Think Big

Uploaded on Sep 30, 2009

http://www.ted.com Tim Brown says the design profession is preoccupied with creating nifty, fashionable objects -- even as pressing questions like clean water access show it has a bigger role to play. He calls for a shift to local, collaborative, participatory "design thinking."

TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Featured speakers have included Al Gore on climate change, Philippe Starck on design, Jill Bolte Taylor on observing her own stroke, Nicholas Negroponte on One Laptop per Child, Jane Goodall on chimpanzees, Bill Gates on malaria and mosquitoes, Pattie Maes on the "Sixth Sense" wearable tech, and "Lost" producer JJ Abrams on the allure of mystery. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. Closed captions and translated subtitles in a variety of languages are now available on TED.com, at http://www.ted.com/translate. Tim Brown, President and CEO, IDEO

Peter Schwartz, Co-founder, Global Business Network; Senior Vice President, Salesforce - Moderator

Design is not just for house interiors or a tech gadget's user interface. Design has come to infiltrate how great leaders think, collaborate and tackle the world's smallest and greatest problems. The idea of design thinking, often credited to IDEO CEO Tim Brown, has transformed analytical thinking into creative yet practical problem solving. It is thinking outside the box come to life. Yves Béhar has leveraged his design ethos with a dedication to quality and a positive consumer-product relationship, and has led a number of diverse design projects like One Laptop Per Child and the NYC Condom, for that city's Department of Health. Join us as the wizards of design thinking Brown and Béhar dissect the formula for harmonizing industry, beauty, brand and meaning.

Redesign DT

In a world of increasing complexity, our problems just seem to get worse and worse. While the activity we call "design" began at the dawn of civilization, “design thinking” has recently been proposed as a means to solve these “wicked problems”—as well as all but guarantee a path to innovation for organizations of all stripes.

But what is "design thinking"? And is it the panacea proposed?

In an unblinking assessment of where design is and where it could take us, Paul Pangaro offers a critique of design thinking grounded in a cybernetic perspective. He argues that conversations are the heart and substance of all design practice, and shows how a cadence of designed conversations is an effective means for us to comprehend, and perhaps even begin to tame, our wicked problems.
